at INauseous()
I've recently been testing out Windows Home Server Beta. The concept is simple and Home Server is much more than just a NAS device. It adds a bunch of capabilities for keeping various devices (up to 10) on your home network backed up, along with a place to safely keep your network based data on a server.
However, I needed something simple & straightforward that would just plug into the network and give me some safety along with significant space. Along come Hammer Storage myshare.

Well its not exactly new but new to many outside of the geek world. Hammer Storage has released a NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive for all of your digital media needs. Everyone has NAS's for sale but Hammer has taken it up a notch. They are selling one terabyte with a 2 TB surfacing this summer. RAID spanning is also built in, the ability to protect your data since the hard drive is partitioned a specific way to provide a backup if one drive fails. You can configure the drive for access via the web if you are away from home. Starting at $500 for the 1 TB is a bit steep so I don't see myself getting one anytime soon.

The unit itself takes 2 hard disks to form anywhere between 320GB and 2TB of storage, with an extra USB expansion port in the back for printers or even more space. Best of all, the NAS has Gigabit Ethernet and RAID 0/1 support, so the performance will be (theoretically) pretty solid.

Just before Christmas, I deployed a 1 TB Hammer Z array from Bell Micro. Some preliminary thoughts:
First, the unit is a solid performer. It is essentially a case of drives a bit smaller than a half-height PC tower case that deliver more than adequate speeds and feeds to serve as a file server for A/V files. Overall: a good implementation of Zetera Storage over IP technology (UDP and IP).
